A powerful antioxidant thought to be beneficial for healthy eyesight
What it is
Lutein is a member of the carotenoid family which gives the yellow colour to fruit & vegetables such as sweet corn, mango & papaya. Lutein comes from the latin “luteus” meaning yellow. It is also found in high concentration in green leafy vegetables such as kale, brussel spouts & spinach.
What it does
Lutein is an antioxidant & therefore helps protect the body from harmful free radicals which are produced by pollution, radiation, burnt food & sunlight. Lutein is also known to be found in high concentration in the human eye in the central retina called the macula. As we age the cells in the retina become less efficient resulting in the loss of central vision, or age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). It is believed that lutein may help protect the macula by acting as a filter against sunlight & as an antioxidant to sock up the free radicals. The average UK diet contains only 1-3g of lutein but research suggests that an appropriate intake could be 6mg daily.
